To resolve the crisis, Keyes, along with a team of the world's most gifted scientists, travel into the earth's core in a subterranean craft piloted by "terranauts," Major Rebecca "Beck" Childs (Swank) and Colonel Robert Iverson (Greenwood). Their mission: detonate a device that will reactivate the core.

UPDATE (10/11) - Paramount Studios has decided to abandon the November 1st release date for The Core and move the film to an undecided release date in March of 2003.

COULTER'S RIGHT ON - Now this is good news. Ann Coulter's new book, Slander: Liberal Lies About the Right is set to debut at #1 on the NY Times bestsellar list. That's the best news I've heard all day. And it's quite an upset too...but then again conservative books always seem to do well on the bestsellars lists. From Robert Bork, Peggy Noonan, Barbara Olson, Bill O'Reilly, Kenny Timmerman, Woody Williams, Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Laura, Bjorn Lomborg (Whose book The Skeptical Environmentalist: Measuring the Real State of the World is the best book I've read this year), Dick Morris, Larry Elder, Bernard Goldberg, David Horowitz, Harry Stein, Andrew Sullivan and Matt Drudge they all seem to blow away liberal and mass competitors to become #1 bestsellers. Now what does that tell you about the book readers (read: the intelligent or cultural interested)? Perhaps it says nothing - I might agree, but I also might agrue it says everything.

CESAR, YOU AREN'T READY - It's hard for me to believe that player like Cesar Izturis is playing in the major leagues. Granted the kid is only 21 years old but there is no way in the world that he should be occuping a spot on a major league roster, let alone playing in 79 out of 82 games for a first place team. The kid hasn't learned how to hit or how to take a pitch or do just about anything that has to do with a baseball bat...

OBP SLG OPS AVG
.262 .318 .580 .234

Those numbers are hands down the worst offense numbers for anyone who has had as many at bats as Izturis. Now I understand that word has it the kid is a wonderfully defense shortshop and we all know that shortstop is an important defense position but there is also a line where common sense and insanity meet. Playing a 21 year old kid who can't hit just becuase he can feild is not an equal trade off. Izturis hasn't shown any other stronger qualities such as speed (4 SB, 6 CS) or power (1 HR). There's no reason he can't play at Triple AAA until he learns some plate discipline. Certainly the Dodgers have other alternatives that they can play at SS while their younger SS learns a thing or two in the minors. The major's is no place to be learning how to play ball or to hit it, in Izturis's case.

BLOG THIS! - It appears that Crazy John survived the blog bash. I wish I could have been there. It certainly looks like fun. There needs to be like an east coast version of this kind of thing. Perhaps at Andrew Sullivan's house in D.C. or anywhere in NYC. If you hear anything let me know or maybe I'll just start one of my own one of these fateful days.

DEEDS RULES...ER, RATHER SUCKS - Mr. Deeds opened up at number one at the Box Office this weekend. It grossed 37 million dollars and my only question is...why?! This movie is awful, truly awful. It is a demonstration of everything that is wrong with the movies. First off Adam Sandler can't act at all, he just kind of stands there and talks in a kind of low monotone little kids voice. He doesn't use facial expressions at all and holds his body in a hunched posture that gives him the appearance of either having extreme constipation or being very stoned. There seems to be something morally wrong with the "Producers of Big Daddy" remaking a Frank Capra movie with Adam Sandler in the Gary Cooper role. Do these people even watch the original? Not for the content or the movie but for the direction and acting. They could learn a thing or two about movie making.

The only redeeming quality of the movie is the always-wonderful John Tuturro playing a Latin butler. Now if they had made a movie with him as the main character and maybe a goofy Sandler as his sidekick/butler this might be a movie worth seeing. The casting of Sandler in the central role is the main problem with this movie. Also the direction is horrible with strange, unnecessary close-ups and editing that seems to have left off important scenes or critical dialogue. I don't get how this movie could make 37 millions. Perhaps someday Sandler will be a joke like Pauley Shore is now and we can look make at his movies with distantly bizarre nostalgia.

I'LL BE BACK - I'm finally going to be getting back some regular internet service tonight. The last 5 days have been awful. The computer labs at school have been closed and the phone service at my new house is not up and running yet. As a result I have not been on the internet for 5 days. I'm sick...what an indication of the new information age we live in. I'm having information withdrawl ;mixed with a bag of blogger withdrawl, filmjerk withdrawl, movieboss withdrawl, fantasy baseball withdrawl not to mention trying to find out what happened to John Tabin. What I mess I have become. Thankfully my friend Manu Samnotra has allowed me to use his computer for a few minutes while I help back him up for his move back home.

But all will be well again soon. Tonight at midnight the phone will be back on and I will be able to sign on using the old reliable AOL. A cable modem will follow soon after and I can get things up and running again. Till then...
