TOP THIS - After ten years of undeafeted play in international competition the USA Men's Basketball team lost for the first time in 58 games last night. They lost to Argentina in the World Championships 87-80. Aren't they only suppose to beat us in soccer, not b-ball?

But does anyone really care about The Dream Team anymore? Nobody even bothers to call them that anymore. The idea of professional NBA players being able to play in the Olympics and the World Championships was cool when we first heard it but it (as the kids say these days) so September 12th. Heck it's more September 1992, the love of these Dream Team is so old. But the question comes to mind what are the greatest upsets of all time? My list below.

1. The Upset: 1921 Saratoga Race Track - The legendary horse Man-O-War is beaten for the only time in his 21 career races. The horse that beats him is named Upset. The surprise is so staggering that a new term enters into the American lexicon.
2. USA Hockey over USSR Hockey: 1980 Lake Placid Olympics - The USSR team had not lost a game in 20 years. The records that we have show that the team did not lose in over 650 international contests. The Soveits claimed that the National Team never even lost against homegrown teams, but those records are hard to believe (like they would tell us they lost to a team from Leningrad). However in that small upstate New York hamlet a bunch of USA's best college ice hockey players did the impossible.
3. Bill Mills in the 10.000 Meters: 1960 Rome Olympics - American's don't run distance races. The folk from Kenya run and win them. Bill Mills came from no where at all to win the 10,000 meters. If you have ever heard the famous television call of his final lap you will know what I mean. The announcer literaly cannot believe what he's seeing. (I cannot remember the announcer, but I want to say Cosell)
4. Villanova over Georgetown: 1985 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship Game - Villianova was a #8 seed; the highest to ever reach the championship. Georgetown was the defending champs and had the unstoppable giant named Patrick Ewing. Villianova went out and shot an ungodly 80%. They won 66-60 and made the NCAA Baseketball tournement a fix for every casual sports fan.
5. Jonn Daly wins the PGA Championship: 1991 PGA Major - Daly was an alternite. He wasn't suppose to be there. He wasn't suppose to win. He had never won a tournement on the tour before. No one had ever heard of him. All he did was go out and beat the greatest golfers in the world to win golf's 4th major.

Runner-Ups
Chicago Cubs loss 1906 World Series to Pirates after Cubs have best winning percentage in Baseball History.
NY Jets guarenteed to win over Colts in Super Bowl III.
Duke University beats an undefeated (35-0) and defending champion UNLV basketball team in 1991 NCAA tourney.
1972 USSR Men's basketball teams beats USA Men's basketball in Olympic Gold Medal game when officials give them three chances to win.
France (France!) wins the 1998 World Cup as the host.

SNEAK PEAK MOVIE OF THE DAY -

THE DIRECTOR: Stephen Daldry
THE SCREEWRITER: David Hare, based on the novel by Micheal Cunningham
THE THESPIANS: Meryl Streep; Nicole Kidman; Julianne Moore; Toni Collette; Claire Danes, Ed Harris, John C. Reilly, Miranda Richardson, Allison Janney and Eileen Atkins.
THE STORY: This ensemble drama tells three stories simultaneously of women in different times, all drawn upon the writings (or life) of author Virginia Woolf. First, there's the author herself in 1923, struggling with depression and thoughts of suicide, while writing Mrs. Dalloway. The other two interlayed stories are that of Laura Brown, a pregnant Los Angeles housewife in 1949 planning a birthday party for her husband who finds that she can't stop reading Mrs. Dalloway, and Clarissa Vaughn, a modern New York woman throwing a party for her friend and former lover, acclaimed author Richard, dying of AIDS (who gave her the nickname of, Mrs. Dalloway).

Not only does this movie have two of the must beautiful woman of modern cinema (Kidman and Moore) but it looks like a sure-fire Oscar caliber film. The academy loves to go crazy of these ensemble period pieces. Now we just have to hope the movie is as good as it could be.

Our director, Steve Daldry, made a name for himself with last year's Billy Elliot, his second film. Elliot was a critical and economical success and certainly showed the kid has gifts, but can he direct a cast of such talented women? The screenwriter is bit more of a mystery. David Hare made a bit of a name for him self when he wrote and directed the fantastic British film Weatherby. But that was back in 1985 and he hasn't done very much since. However Hare is a rather accomplished screenwriter so there is plenty of hope that he can handle this subject matter well.

You can certainly expect a rather deliberated paced film. There are no stunts and no boobies in this movie. It's as serious a drama as serious dramas get. What this movie has going for it is one heck of a fantastic cast and that is what will draw people into the movie theater.

On December 27th,2002 Paramount Pictures presents The Hours.
