WHAT RYAN'S READING -

Ambrose (Pegasus Bridge) narrates in vivid detail the adventures, misadventures, triumphs and tragedies of a single U.S. Army infantry company over its span of organizational life. Formed in July 1944 and deactivated in November 1945, E Company was one of the most successful light infantry units in the European theater. Its troops saw their first action on D-Day behind the Normandy beachhead, took part in Operation Market Garden in Holland, held the perimeter around Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, and were the first to reach Hitler's Bavarian outpost at Berchtesgaden. The book is enlivened with pertinent comments by veterans of "Easy Company,'' who recall not only the combat action but their relations with their officers (one company commander was a petty tyrant of the worst type, but his oppressive ways had much to do with the unit's impressive esprit de corps ) and their impressions of the countries through which they campaigned (hated the French, loved the Germans). This is a terrific read for WW II actions buffs. It was of course the subject of last years epic HBO mini-series produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Speilberg.

Popular writer and Outside columnist Sides (Stomping Grounds) interviewed participants in one of WWII's little-known exploits the rescue of 500 American and Allied POWs from Cabanatuan prison camp on the Philippine island of Luzon. This gripping account intertwines the tale of these prisoners, who were survivors of the horrible Bataan Death March in 1942, and 121 officers and men of the army's Sixth Ranger Battalion. Led by Colonel Henry Mucci and Captain Robert Prince, these Rangers, who had yet to taste active combat, trekked 30 miles behind Japanese lines to effect the rescue, haunted all the while by the knowledge that if their secret mission was leaked, the POWs would probably be massacred by their captors. Sides includes the heroic efforts of Claire Phillips and other resistance fighters to keep the Americans supplied with accurate intelligence, and the scores of villagers who helped the POWs to safety. Some Alamo Scouts and two Filipino guerrilla groups provided no small assistance to Mucci and his men. The raid itself was almost anticlimactic as the Rangers burst into the POW compound, eliminating the garrison and bringing out the inmates in less than half an hour. It's a tale worthy of a Hollywood movie (and film rights have been optioned by Universal). The author's excellent grasp of human emotions and bravery makes this a compelling book hard to put down You'll never look at a Nissan the same way again. This is hands down one of the most comprehensive and thrilling reads of non-fiction I've ever experienced. A must read for all war buffs, lovers of great drama and those who cherish the resislance of the human spirit.

BASEBALL PREDICTIONS CONT'D - I know I'm a little late on this update but here are my updated picks of great pompousity for the Major League Championship series.

ALCS
Angels over Twins in 5 - The Angels just score too many runs for the Twins to have a chance to compete. However if the Twins can win a game in Anahiem they have a good chance of winnning 3 or 4 at home in the Metrodome. There is just something about that place that gives the Twins a distinct homefield advantage. If they can hold on to homefield advantage or get the series back to Minnesota, even if trailing three games to two, they have a change to make the World Series.

NLCS
Cardinels over Giants in 7 - These are two the hotest team over the last month of baseball. The Cardinels rolled over the defending champs and the Giants continue to fire on all cylinder despite a less then steller pitching staff and weak bottom half of their lineup. Over a seven game series I firmly believe the better team will win 75% of the time. In this case that is Cardinels, if they have Scott Rolen. If not the Giants may have a slight edge but I still like the Cardinels because Matt Morris is a monster and Alan Benes is a better 4th starter then Livan Hernandez. Therefore I give a very slim edge to St. Louis.
