THE BUTLER DID IT - Have you been reading about Winona Ryder's shoplifting trail? I love this stuff. Only in American can you rip off a store of $5,560 go on Saturday Night Live and make jokes about it.
Of course it turns out now, almost a full year after the incident, that Ms. Ryder was only researching for a acting role. I can't find one article from the time of Ryder's bust, December 12th, 2001 through two weeks ago that mentions any reason for Ryder's motivations. Press stories immediatly after the incident state that Ryder denies taking anything from the store. Apparently it took a few lawyers and ten months for Ms. Ryder to figure out just exactly she was doing walking out of Saks 5th Avenue with possessions she didn't pay for.
According to the testomony in the case, Saks security official Colleen Rainey looked through slats of a door and saw Ryder kneeling on the floor of a fitting room on Dec. 12, taking things out of shopping bags and putting them on the floor around her. "I saw her cutting sensor tags off of merchandise," Rainey testified. Ryder claims that she was taking garments to research for an upcoming acting role. Researching apparently motivated her to cut the security sensor tags off of the garments she took from the store?! I hope I am not the only one laughing out loud at that statement. You can't write comedy better then is. It's priceless.

WORLD SERIES WRAPUP - Well I told you faithful readers, predictions mean jack sqaut (Boy was I wrong about everything in these playoffs). The Anahiem Angels went out last night and proved everyone wrong by winning the Major League Baseball World Series. I'm happy for the Angels. They did something no one at all thought they could do. I mean you can't find a person who picked the Angels to win the world series this year.
I would like to have seen Barry Bonds win the MVP though. If you give the award to the player who performs best in the series, then Bonds with 5 homeruns, a .371 batting average and .731 on base percantage, then Bonds, by far, dominated the entire series. He was the undeniable presence upon which everything depended on in this series. He more then any other player did the most to help his team (at least when he was pitched to and given the chance to do so). Bobby Richardson of the 1960 New York Yankees is the only player on the losing team to be named MVP.
The Angels really stuck to it Commissioner Bud last night. They went out and proved to the baseball world that you don't need the highest payroll or the best talent to win a world championship. This is precisily what Bud does not want you to believe. In his world, like Ralph Nader's, only the people with money can suceed. For them there is no room for hard work, team spirit and giving it all you can. Anahiem is true success story that shows the great complexity of baseball and what it actually takes to win.
Baseball is a sport with great parity. Consider that since the wild card came into effect in 1995 only 6 teams have not qualified for the playoffs in the seven years hence. One of those teams, the Devil Rays, only started play in 1998 and another, the Toronto Blue Jays, won back to back championships in in 92 and 93. Parity, not the Yankees dominating everything, is the theme of the day. When you look at those facts you realize that baseball is a pretty even game. All it takes is a lot of effort and solid teamwork. The Angels proved that completely last night. Congrats Anaheim.
