HEADLINE BROWSING - Strange pickings for the news wire:

- Southerby's will auction off a 93 word document authored by J.K. Rowling outlining the plot of the next Harry Potter novel. The expected starting bid; just under 10,000. Did anyone know this novel was going to be called, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix?" I don't know I must have missed that headline.

- Along with Ben Affleck, who toped the list, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfield was selected as one of the sexiest men alive by People Magazine.

- It's news that Micheal Jackson should not be around children?

- It seems that Democrats in Colorado have caught Al Gore-recount-fever. Please spare us.

- Mike Piazza is still not gay.

- It's nice to know that the University of Arizona is well in line with the folks who run, "Girls Gone Wild." Heck they want to train their students to be the best whores and shallow sex addicts around (i.e. the art of erotic dance for fat-bottomed babes). I'm glad my tax dollars ain't paying for it (but then again they are paying Hillary's salary).

- Colleges and Universities are outright hostile towards conservatives? No....never....

- You know a lot of people don't like the Christian Right in this country and what they believe in but they certainly try their case in the court of ideas. You don't see Pat Robertson leading a mob and killing innocents when something that is anti-christian get's published.

It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world.

TAX THIS - It's 1861 all over again, but without the moral albatross of slavery. I've always thought, that as a historian, there was no legal or moral reason the confederacy should have not been allowed to secede from the Union, except for that big thing called slavery. But of course that's like taking the Fat out of Fat Al Roker (or is it?) so it trumps just about any other moral or legally reasoning, but today there is no slavery, so could a state/city/county really secede?

Well that's what it appears one town in N.J. and Houston want to find out. I say, bravo. Bravo for fighting a tax system that over taxes the middle wage earner, the successful, the poor and anybody who makes a buck. Succession is needed as a moral rebellion to government tyranny. Without secession the people, often in a minority, hold no sway over a government.

The specifics of the NJ and Houston cases are all too familiar. Government debt is to high, so the government in turn decides to raise taxes. Does the government decide to investigate or reduce the programs that caused the debt in the first place? Of course not! The government's role is never to work as an intelligent business would work, but to always grow, grow, grow and take more money from it's citizens. It's the nature of beast. The only way for the disgusted citizens to fit the beast is to refuse to feed it...to secede, in a lawful and just manner.

The great issue of the Civil War that lives to this day is not the morality of slavery, but the morality of secession. Is it just for free people to reject their form of government and establish a new one, whole separate from the previous and other one? In 1776 that's exactly what the first American's were doing.
